This album commemorates twenty remarkable years of Shaking the Tree choir 1999-2019. For this milestone we wrote a song to express who we are and how we feel about our enduring and flourishing musical community. The following words, offered by our members and put into verse by director Bronwyn Calcutt, say it all.

Roots Grown Deep
Sunday morning… best day of the week.
Choir is forming, my soul to keep.
Familiar faces I’ve come to trust,
Voices rising, the sound of us.
Ordinary people, servants of the song,
Taking on a challenge to make the music strong.
In a space of listening, caring for the sound,
It’s a thing of beauty – don’t it make you proud!

Here’s to the things we love, here’s to the twenty years so far,
Here’s to the songs we sing, here’s to the truth we speak,
Here’s to the friends we keep… oh yeah!

Like a forest, intertwined,
Giving shelter in troubled times.
Songs have power to change a life,
Express the inexpressible and cast the light…

Here’s to the things we love, here’s to the things we’re fighting for,
Here’s to how much we care, here’s to the time we share,
Here’s to just being there…oh yeah!

Sunday morning… best day of the week.
Choir is forming, my soul to keep.

Here’s to the things we love, here’s to the twenty years so far,
Here’s to the growing tree, here’s to the being free,
Here’s to the Roots Grown Deep…

Here’s to the things we love, here’s to the long road we are on,
Here’s to the voice I found, here’s to our common ground,
Here’s to the beating heart, here’s to the fire we start,
Here’s to the things we love, yeah… oh yeah!
